Job Description

We are looking for a trainee animal technician to provide husbandry and welfare care for the animals housed primarily within the Research Support Facility (RSF). This state of the art facility provides a dedicated animal barrier and containment facility giving provision for the housing and utilization of model organisms in genetics research.

You will be working as part of a dedicated team providing high standards of animal care and assistance to the facility users. You will assist in the husbandry and welfare of the species housed in the RSF. You will also participate in maintaining mouse breeding colonies and experimental groups using IVC technology.

Essential Skills The post holder must be comfortable with handling and being around animals.

It is essential that the post holder is able to follow set instructions and procedures correctly and have proven experience of keeping accurate records.

The ability to communicate with team members in an effective and efficient manner is needed.

Ideal Skills Experience of caring for animals would be an advantage. As would previous experience of entering data onto electronic databases. Other information

The post holder will usually work alongside a more experienced technician and will refer upwards for most decisions.

There is a requirement to participate in a weekend and public holiday rota (this will involve working a maximum of 1 weekend in 3) to ensure the RSF is satisfactorily maintained at all times. The role will also occasionally require hours to be worked outside of the normal working hours to fit with RSF User requests.

The post holder will be expected to undertake and participate in suitable training programmes, with the opportunity to study towards IAT exams and obtain a personal licence.

The work involves some manual lifting and much of the day is spent standing.

Salary range for this position is £13725 to £17230 dependent on experience. Closing date: 12th September 2010
